Claire Nichols

Claire has developed a strong understanding of economic regulation following a career that spans 25 years in the utilities sector.

Her particular areas of expertise are in strategic communications, stakeholder engagement and in writing and managing material that is technical, highly sensitive or time critical.

She first worked with WICS at the 2002-06 Strategic Review and since that time has written many of our key documents, such as our annual report and corporate plan. She has been responsible for the communications material at multiple price reviews, including at the most recent 2015-21 review. She recently developed our new communications strategy and wrote our Corporate Plan 2021-27.

Claire leads on many other aspects of our communications and engagement, including managing agencies, developing our corporate brand, preparing presentations for senior colleagues and contributing content to our website.

She was a key member of the Open Water initiative, the programme to open up the market for retail water and sewerage services in England in 2017.

Claire brings a unique perspective having worked both for other regulators (including Ofwat and the Northern Ireland Utility Regulatory) and for other regulated businesses. This includes being Lead Author of the 2021-26 Wales & West Utilities Business Plan (GD2) and Lead Author of Northumbrian Water’s 2020-25 Business Plan (PR19).
